We get a lot of high performance cars in our garage and we’re always keeping an eye out for ways to improve their performance. One way people are asking us more about is cool air intake for the engine. What is it? What does it do? Does it actually help? Well, let’s take a look.

What Is Cool Air Intake?

Cool air intake is a process by which the air filtration for your car is placed outside the engine. This allows your car to suck cool air from the outside through it. It’s a fairly inexpensive upgrade, costing between $150 to $500 depending on who installs it and how much power you want it to have. Even the cheapest upgrades of this kind will come with several benefits. Let’s go over them, shall we?

1. Reduced Chance of Overheating

The primary purpose of the cool air intake is to help keep your engine from overheating. Pumping cool air from outside through the engine compartment will blow the heated air the engine produces out. This means the air inside the engine is slower to heat up. It will keep your engine from getting too hot, which makes its many functions operate more smoothly. Heat also causes damage to the engine, so helping it keep cool means less repairs down the road.

2. Improved Fuel Economy

The internal combustion engine is powered by the enemy given off by burning fuel, which is primarily gasoline. Fuel efficiency is maintained by keeping a good ratio of gas fumes to oxygen. If the level of oxygen in the engine gets low, it burns more fuel, but the extra fuel burnt won’t increase the performance of the vehicle. A cool air intake upgrade will put more oxygen into the engine, which helps keep the amount of fuel being burnt at correct levels. This improves the fuel efficiency, which saves you money for every mile you drive!

3. Increased Horsepower

Obviously, overheating will damage your engine, but even non-damaging heat levels interfere with your car’s performance. A cool air intake will keep the temperature down, letting it do its job much better. A drop of only five degrees in engine temperature can translate to a 1% increase in horsepower. There is an upper limit, however; if the air gets too cold, it can start to interfere with the engine’s performance in a number of ways, such as increasing condensation. In areas that have especially cold winters, this can be troublesome. Fortunately, it’s easy to mitigate this by knowing where to place the intake.

We don’t want to oversell this too much, though. Some air intakes advertise an increase as much as four times the normal horsepower. Testing doesn’t seem to bear this much of an increase out, but when the upgrade is installed properly, we do see a consistent and detectable increase in horsepower. It won’t turn your car into a monster of power, but it will give you a bit more kick.

4. Less Pollution in Your Car

Most people focus on the performance benefits, but there are a few health benefits, too! The air intake will pump fresh air into your car, causing the air to circulate better. This reduces the amount of pollution that builds up in your car, such as smog, road debris, and exhaust fumes. It works better than standard air filters, too, keeping junk out of your lungs. Cleaner air means healthier breathing!

5. Environmentally Friendly

Are you worried about the environment? A lot of people are and that’s where this upgrade also helps! Disposable air filters need to be replaced every 15,000 miles, but cool air intake systems only need to be cleaned every 50,000 miles. Furthermore, disposable air filters are thrown away, but the air intake is merely cleaned and put back. That reduces the amount of waste your car produces as well as improving the air filtration.

6. Improves the Value of Your Car

In addition to not being an expensive upgrade, it significantly increases the value of your car. Cool air intake improves the car’s performance, reduces some of the parts that need regular replacement, improves fuel efficiency, and reduces the repairs it needs. All of those things save you a ton of money over the lifetime of your car. Those savings also make it valuable on the market. People will look for all of those benefits in a car when buying. That makes your car much more attractive for resale value!

Cool Air Intake is A Universal Upgrade

When it comes to upgrades, a lot of research should be done to find out if it’s right for your car. Turbo chargers might boost performance, but they also increase the wear on the engine if the airflow is poor. Some upgrades affect how well your vehicle handles on the road, which could make them harder to drive. Cool air intake, however, is one of those rare upgrades that never has any negative side-effects as long as it’s properly installed. That, combined with how inexpensive the upgrade usually is, makes it a first choice for many people who want to boost the performance of their vehicle.
